Growing up my family was blessed to have a gramma who made amazing Greek baklava. My gramma passed away over 10 years ago but we have continued making her wonderful treat. I love making this dish because it reminds me of her and so many great memories.
- 6 T butter plus 2 sticks for coating
- 6 C Walnuts chopped
- 3 T cinnamon
- 2/3 C sugar
- 3 Eggs Yolks
- 2 Packages of fillo dough
In a bowl combine the walnuts, melted butter, cinnamon. sugar, and egg yolks
Melt the 2 sticks of butter in a bowl for coating. Cut fillo dough into 2 1/2 inch strips. you will need 3 strips of fillo per triangle of baklava. Lay out one strip and very lightly coat the strip with butter by either using your fingers or a brush. lay the next strip on top of the butter strip and repeat the coating. Repeat one more time so you have a total of three strips and three light butter coats.
On the top of the butter coated strips place a little over a tablespoon of the chopped nut mixture and fold like a flag. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 45 min at 325 degrees on the middle rack .
For The syrup
- 5 C Sugar
- 5 C Water
- 3 cinnamon Sticks
- 2 T lemon juice
- 1/3 C Honey
Place sugar, water, and cinnamon stick into a pot and cook slowly on medium low untill you get a thin syrup reduced by about 1/3. Once reduced add the lemon juice and the honey.
Once the baklava is baked drop baklava in syrup and let sit in syrup for 30 seconds each side. Once soaking is finished place baklava back on the cookie sheet.
You may now eat these wonderful, amazing, greek treats
